The Joys of Feeding a Toddler

It seems at 15 months old our daughter has become a fussy eater. Oh, the joys of feeding a toddler.

If you remember way, way, way back (probably a year ago) we tried our hand at baby led weaning. In September 2016, I got a job for 3 months and our parents were not comfortable continuing this method. Consequently, we reverted to spoon feeding Ava. While she will eat chicken and a couple other items by hand the majority of her food is mashed or from Ella’s Kitchen pouches.

We went on holidays to Disney World for two weeks in May 2017. Upon arriving home, Ava refuses to eat, it is a constant battle. She loves porridge so her breakfast is the only meal of the day she will eat calmly and in full. Lunch and Dinner are a struggle, I have to force the spoon near her mouth in order for her to taste. After that, it is touch and go if she will eat the meal or not.

I get annoyed and frustrated at this method and start to compare her eating habits to babies of the same age. After 2-3 weeks of struggling, I have decided that beside her breakfast, every other meal and snack will be given whole so Ava can feed herself.

We started feeding a toddler, on Tuesday 20 June 2017, I will attach some Instagram story pictures to show examples of her meals.

Overall, I’m unsure if any progress has been made over this week. Ava seems to be eating less food than before. As a result, for week 2, I want to try some of the same meals again. This will give Ava a good opportunity to taste and feel the textures again. Oh, the joys of feeding a toddler.

As always, I am open to suggestions. Please feel free to leave a comment below or contact me through my social media.

  1. Kids are so finicky! My twin girls are 16 months, and for the past 2-3 months, they have been SO picky. They ate anything put in front of them as babies!
My son is 3.5 and is a pretty good eater. He went through a fussy stage from 2-3ish, but does a pretty good job now. Just keep persevering! It’s so tough, I know!

    1. I’m hoping it’s just a phase. I may try less variety and just one type of food at a time. I wish it was easier! Thanks for your comment, it has provided some reassurance.

  2. I’ve heard you have to offer the same foods several times before kids will eat them, so offering the same meals seems like a solid plan. But not a guarantee. My picky eater will love something one day and eat a ton, then refuse to eat it ever again. It’s rough. You’re doing everything you can it looks like. Hopefully, it’s a short phase.

  3. You are doing such a great job Mama! Keep it up….my little one is 21 months and one day she is loving something and then the next day not so much. Introducing them frequently is a great idea! My little one also likes anything she can grab and go with, so even if she is on the move while eating, it makes me happy knowing she is getting something in her!

  4. I have a 3 year old boy who has always been a fussy eater. i wouldnt worry too much, they eat when they are hungry. I used to bring him to the doctor and unless you can actually see her getting thinner there is not a whole pile you can do about it. These days he lives of mini sausage rolls and cheese. I love your channel. Im from co. cavan ireland. 🙂
